A DOT physical is an exam you must undergo to ensure your medical health before obtaining a commercial driver’s license, explains Dr. Sunil Verma of Livingston Chiropractic Clinic in Livingston, CA. DOT physicals and a complete medical history comprise two of the commercial driver’s license requirements.

You must take a DOT physical before you can drive as a professional bus or truck driver. Ensuring that you meet the physical standards necessary for the job of professional driving, helps to protect public safety. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires this physical exam, conducted by licensed medical examiners registered with the FMCSA National Registry.

This comprehensive exam considers your overall physical health, emotional stress abilities, past medical history, hearing and vision. You must undergo a DOT physical if you:

  • transport hazardous materials requiring the display of a hazmat placard
  • receive compensation for operating a motor vehicle that transports more than eight people
  • operate a motor vehicle that transports more than 15 people
  • operate a motor vehicle with a gross combination weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds

Once you pass a DOT physical in Livingston, CA, you’ll receive a medical certificate that lets you drive a commercial vehicle for two years, as long as no mental condition or physical issue that requires further tests.

If you have been diagnosed with a medical condition, such as diabetes, you must undergo a DOT physical. A diagnosis of one of the following diseases means you will need an annual exam:

  • diabetes mellitus
  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure

Certain medical conditions such as unusually high blood pressure may require you to undergo a physical every three months and undergo medical treatment to address the problem.

Full Medical History

You will also need to provide the doctor administering your DOT physical with a comprehensive medical health history. This will include any medications you take, surgeries you underwent, alcohol, tobacco, other substances you consume or consumed in the past, and any health symptoms you experience. You must reveal any medical conditions you have. The physical examination following the completion of this form checks your hearing, vision, blood pressure, and other health indicators. The latter includes undergoing a urinalysis to determine blood sugar level, testing for drugs, and determining other health indicators.
